TOW #2: Haiti Earthquake Crisis and Social Media January 26, 2010

Filed under: PRCA 3030,TOW: Topic of the Week — aschlum1 @ 12:35 am

The earthquake disaster that occurred in Haiti was very tragic for many people around the world. As it was a natural disaster, there was not much that could have been done to prevent the earthquake, but much can be done to help.

Social media can get information out faster than almost anything. After the Haitian earthquake occurred, there were already posts all over the internet on various social media sites that were giving out information about the disaster. Many organizations are using social media sites to get the world out about different ways people can donate or give to the people affected by the earthquake. The American Red Cross has given out information on many social media sites about how people can text ‘Haiti’ to 90999 and it will donate $10 to help in relief efforts. Social media sites make it simple and easy for people to find out ways to help when something like this occurs.

On another note… our class was asked why comments were such an integral part of blogs. I believe that blog comments are extremely important because it is important to know what people think about your posts and what you are saying. Feedback, whether it is positive or constructive criticism, is essential when blogging. Blog comments are also beneficial because it lets the blogger know how many people are reading their blog and how it is affecting certain people as well. An effective blog comment would not be harsh or rude, even if you disagree with what the blog is saying. It is important to write in a way that will help the blogger to understand what they did right or wrong and also appreciate what you are saying.

Allie, I agree with you! Social Media has really helped with efforts to promote and raise money for the diaster in Haiti. The use of twitter, television, facebook and text messages have really helped to make a splash in helping to raise money for the people in Haiti. Social Media does help to make it easier for people to particaipate and give to Haiti. I think with the increase of accessibility that social media sites/new technologies have provided, it has really made it easier for people to give. For example sending a text is a lot easier than calling a hotline. Great Points!
